Congratulations!

You are finally transitioning from the military. Your country thanks you for your service. You developed as very valuable skill set that corporate managers are searching high and low for. There’s only one problem. In order to reach the open door, you need a detailed guide to get you in front of the right hiring manager. This next mission will be the MOST difficult yet. Do NOT tackle this mission alone. If you try and wing it, all the experience, technical expertise, and leadership won’t get you any closer to your goal. Here’s a tactical seven-step guide to help you nail your transition to civilian success!

1. Discover Your Strengths and Interests

You’ve been trained to tackle any mission, and that means you can tackle any job! But don’t assume every job is the right fit for you. Certain jobs will require you to start fresh with adults half your age and twice as tech savvy. Take an honest self-assessment of what works for you at this point in life. Take advantage of free online tools to translate your military training into language that HR managers understand. Consider furthering your education or available internships to gain critical experience. There are numerous veteran organizations that can help you find the perfect career.

2. Explore Exciting Career Paths

Once you’ve pinpointed your strengths and interests, approach researching companies like you approached the mission, Head On! While it’s tempting to reach for the lightning bolt, it’s best to start with the end state in mind. Do you want the executive suite with the fast-paced action? Do you want the freedom to travel? Are you committed to sacrificing to the level necessary? While salary is a big deal, don’t let it be the only factor. Think about job growth, innovations, location, and work-life balance. Don’t settle for good; find the job that fits your end goals.

3. 10 X Networking

Your military connections are considered liquid gold. Reach out to fellow veterans and offer to catch up over lunch, your treat. Ask if they wouldn’t mind making warm introductions with people in their network. Fellow veterans are more often connected with HR managers who find value in your skill set. The small investment of time and money could pay big dividends. Job fairs and career events are great places to meet recruiters.

4. Be Professional Online

Create a professional email, preferably one that includes your first and last name. BigBoy@hotmail is not an email address that HR managers will associate with a potential hire. Also create a profile on a professional social media site. Consider investing in a professional photo for your profile. Another crucial step to consider is cleaning up your social media accounts. Employers may take a look at your profile to see if you are a fit culturally.

5. Recon Time!

Once you get the call back, time for some recon! Research the company and the entire industry. When the “do you have any questions for me” comes up, ASK QUESTIONS! A few well-researched company questions will show your level of interest. Be prepared to discuss the company, industry trends, and how your skill set could potentially benefit the company.

6. Stay Neutral and Professional

We all have strong opinions, but job interviews aren’t the place for them. Leave any political, religious, or social views at home. Remove any stickers, buttons, or pins that express these views. Avoid speaking negatively about past employers or colleagues—it reflects poorly on your character and professionalism. Play it cool.

7. Crush the First Impression with Style

Your appearance can make a huge impact. Choose clothing that conveys confidence, competence, and professionalism. Invest in a nice fitting suit in neutral colors like greys and dark blues. Adding warm colors with the perfect tie can potentially make a lasting impression. Pay attention to your body language and facial expressions. The business professional look will boost your confidence and help you feel at home in your new workplace.

Don’t leave your job search to chance. Do your research, look sharp, and be prepared. K Bernard Classic® ties and accessories are designed to work perfectly with any wardrobe, giving you that extra edge. Get ready to conquer the job market with confidence and style! Your next mission awaits.
